I went to Toronto for the weekend.
One thing I have never understood about the city- why they are so hockey crazy.
"Let's go boys."
Even my old roomate Shawn, when I asked him if the Leafs won their last game he said, "They don't do that anymore- they are taking the year off." Although, so is Team Canada but that's another story (but they do have the same coach. Hmmmmmm.)
Maybe it's because Torontonians have nothing else to do in the winter- no real skiing, it's hard to get out of the city, it's really cold.
While I was in Toronto, I went to my friend's son's hockey game.
And oh my God are they ever serious about it.
All I could hear the whole time was a hockey mom shouting "DOMINIC!!!" over and over between calls of "ICE THE PUCK!!!"
I totally get it now, why grown up people would fight over kids who can't even see over the boards when they are sent to the penalty box. And why those kids, who will end up living in Toronto, are so obsessed with playing well.
My friend's son won the league championship, by the way. Maybe he'll grow up to be a Flame.
Is it because Toronto is so expensive to live in, everyone is waiting for a professional hockey player's salary before getting a yard?
Or maybe it's because every parent's dream is to have their kid turn out a superstar like Jerry Rice. Handsome. A Champion. Rich...well, except the Dancing With The Stars part.
(Which apparently is just like the Superbowl, according to Rice.)
